"Do you recommend making your diversity visible during the selection process? If yes, in which step? And should it be included in the cv?
What are the company's policies related to gender identity in job placement?
Companies answer LGBTQI+ students' questions
AXA, Bain&Company, Nestlè, Oracle and a special guest: Igor Suran, Executive Director of Parks - Liberi e Uguali attended the Career Service event "LGBT+ for inclusion: employers' policies" to talk about the company's approach and perspective in terms of social inclusion. Many students of the Politecnico di Milano, about to make their career choice, participated online to find the answers to many questions that are often not thought about.
At the beginning of the event, we launched a survey of participating students. This showed that 86% of the students who responded thought it was important to express themselves at their best in the workplace and in university life and therefore, to be at ease in sharing their gender identity. The reflection that emerged from the company representatives is that an environment that does not accept diversity would not allow anyone to be themselves in an authentic way.
This is why it is important to ask questions about the company's inclusion policy during the interview, and to study the company from this point of view during the job search.
Human resources of companies are the first to meet a candidate in the selection process. 69% of respondents believe it is important for a company to make explicit its corporate policy on LGBT+ inclusion during the interview. However, this approach is still uncommon: 21% of survey respondents said they do not know how they would behave in such a situation, while 10% do not feel comfortable asking these questions during the interview.
During the meeting, companies presented their concrete actions, as well as their policies, with the aim of effectively communicating inclusion and diversity issues, both to their employees and to the talents to be hired. Many companies now provide training courses on inconsciuous bias, how to learn how to manage and avoid stereotypes and also on the use of a more inclusive language. In addition to active participation in Milano Pride and membership of the association Parks - Liberi e Uguali, they organize awareness raising events only for their company.
LGBT+ for inclusion: employers’ policiesis one of the many initiatives of the Politecnico di Milano organized within the Polimi Pride Week to support diversity, which brings students and companies together for an open and sincere dialogue on inclusion policies.
